How to Avoid Driving While Impaired Over the Holidays

People drinking beer

For many, the holiday season is a time of celebration. Temptation is everywhere and it’s easy to overindulge in good food and intoxicating drink. But if you’re planning on drinking even a small amount, it’s best not to drive. Here are a few tips for ensuring you keep yourself (and others) safe this holiday season.

Take Transit

It might not be the most glamorous form of transportation, but taking the bus to and from a holiday party is one of the safest (and most economical) methods of travel.

Call for a Ride

If you’d prefer to travel in a vehicle, call a professional taxi service, a friend or family member to take you to and from the party. If you are a member of a car sharing service such as Car2Go or Evo, you could also drive yourself to the event, then take an alternative form of transportation home. Throughout the holiday season many organizations run volunteer driving services that can help take you home for a small fee or donation. One good example is Operation Red Nose which runs from 9 p.m. to 3 p.m. on specific nights. The best part is that their service is totally free and confidential.

Stay the Night

If you’re going to a party at the home of a friend where you feel comfortable, you may want to ask beforehand whether you can spend the night so that you can enjoy yourself without worrying about driving home. If no guest accommodations are available, check to see if a nearby hotel or motel can put you up. A host or party guest who may not be willing to drive you home may gladly take you to accommodations that are close by. If you are injured in an accident during the holiday season, please contact a personal injury lawyer at Dick Byl Law Corporation.
